Four Japanese Writing Systems

1. hiragana: used to write native Japanese words, cursive “round” kana script, also known as “women’s script”.

example: ひらがな

2. katagana: used to write foreign words, angular kana script

example: カタカナ

3. kanji: writing system adopted from the Chinese hanzi, used to write words imported from Chinese, especially certain concepts (e.g. water, home)

example: 万葉仮名

4. kaomoji: ヽ(・∀・)ノ
