Four Chinese New Year Customs

1. Eat turnip cake, rice balls or steamed fish

2. Squeeze into a flower market along with thousands of other people. Buy the last ripped flowers for horrendous prices. Eat sticky sweets.

3. Get bored by the lion dance until you see a good one

4. Hand out (married) or receive (unmarried) red envelopes (hong2bao1 – 紅包) including money. Say “Gong1 Xi3 Fa1 Cai2” (Congratulations and become wealthy! – 恭喜发财). Don’t tell anyone when you get married.

Happy Year of the Monkey!

Edit: Don’t forget the fireworks!
